With working and parenting a common mix, we respect the commitment and juggle that this brings. Supporting and understanding each other is critical. We spoke with Arwa (Ar-wah) Mohamed, Senior Education Counsellor, Egypt, Cairo about how she balances work and parenting three young girls.

"The best thing about working whilst parenting is being a role model for my children. It sets the example and motivates them.

Sometimes my daughter interviews me. She asks me “Why do you like your job? Why are you still working there? Do you enjoy it? Is it like homework?” These questions make me laugh, as well as make me happy. I love my job at IDP. When students call me to tell me they achieved their dreams, it makes me so happy to be part of their journey.

Working and parenting is challenging, but it is the best lesson in managing time and being organised. I want to be there for my children’s achievements and to balance home, school, work, assignments, parent meetings and school activities. Some days are harder than others. You really need to love your job, otherwise it is difficult and not enjoyable.

I enjoy being a working mum. When I’m at work, with adults, I focus on work and then I have the energy to focus on my family at home.

Having support is so important, otherwise the balance doesn’t work. Between my family and friends we help each other out and my mum is a big support, especially when I have to travel for work.

IDP supports me by appreciating the flexibility needed. I have had open, respectful and caring conversations with my manager and have the flexibility to work from home and to work around school pick up times, as needed. The flexibility allows me to be my best at home and at work.

My advice to other working parents is to take some time to yourself, live the whole experience, don’t put pressure on yourself, separate life and work – don’t take work pressure home or home pressure to work, take the opportunity to have fun! And please find a job like that you like.

I refresh myself, and relieve stress, by having fun with my colleagues at work. We get together and have fun gatherings for days like International Women’s Day and Valentine’s Day. I love looking out for my team and motivating them to be their best, just like I motivate my children to be their best.

One of my proudest moments is when my daughter wrote a piece about me and my work for her homework. She put in such a big effort, and it was in English. I was so happy about what she wrote, and it made me realise the role model I am for my children."

Thank you Arwa, for sharing your experience. You’re definitely increasing the challenge by also studying your masters! All the best.

We encourage everyone to take the time to understand each other’s challenges, provide support and flexibility, and importantly – have fun together!
