06 October 2026New research from IELTS partners British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment has revealed recognition from universities and institutions is top of mind for test takers preparing to pursue their global ambitions.
IELTS Voices, a new survey of 8,395 English language test takers and prospective candidates across 165 countries, found that the vast majority of test takers (82 per cent) will prioritise an English language test that is recognised as broadly as possible, and 42 per cent of those taking IELTS for study purposes would consider more than one study destination.
As the study abroad landscape becomes more competitive and complex, test takers are focused on ensuring their results will be transferrable across different pathways, to maximise their flexibility if their circumstances change suddenly.
In line with this desire for flexibility, the research also revealed that test takers are more than twice as likely to prefer being able to choose an English language test from an official list of government-approved providers (43 per cent) over a single government-mandated test (20 per cent).
Close to nine in 10 respondents (89 per cent) said achieving successful outcomes was equally or more important than selecting the cheapest test option. Only 11 per cent said they would choose a lower-cost test even if it reduced their confidence in achieving their goals, while 41 per cent said they would choose the test they believed gave them the best chance of success, even if it cost more.
IDP Education’s Chief Partner Officer, Simon Emmett, said the research was reflective of how test takers were navigating a complex and competitive environment.
“Our research shows that global test takers are ambitious and mobile,” Mr Emmett said. “They want to keep their options open and invest in a test that gives them the greatest chance of success.”
“Many people are comparing multiple pathways and requirements, and often they are doing so in a second language. As a sector, we need to make sure information on accepted tests is clearer, consistent and helps guide them to the right choices.”
“Behind the data are people making important decisions about their futures. Listening to test takers helps us better understand the choices they make, the challenges they face and the support that can help them succeed.”
The research also highlights the confidence and readiness gains associated with English language test preparation, with 67 per cent of respondents reporting improvements in speaking confidence, academic or professional writing - or both - as a result of preparing for IELTS.
“Many respondents told us that preparing for an English language test helped build confidence and strengthen the skills they need to achieve their study and career goals,” said Francesca Woodward, Global Managing Director, English, Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
“While experiences differ across countries and pathways, test takers are united in seeing English proficiency as an investment in their future. Institutions have an opportunity to recognise that value and support learners as they build the skills needed for study, work and migration.”
“IELTS Voices reminds us that English language learning is not simply about meeting a requirement, but about helping people develop skills that will empower them throughout their lives.”
